Are National Lenders Quietly Winning the Next Generation of Your Customers?

A mortgage is one transaction.

But a younger homebuyer could represent the beginning of a much longer banking relationship.

That's why the competition for younger homebuyers deserves more attention than simply asking who closed the most mortgages last quarter.

The bigger question may be:

Who is building relationships with the next generation of households in your community?

Start With Your Own Market

Around one Wisconsin branch, we reviewed 827 closed home-purchase loans to borrowers under age 35 during 2024 and 2025.

Half went to a large bank or national lender.

National mortgage companies and fintechs accounted for 36%.

Those numbers aren't a national benchmark.

They're one market.

And that's exactly why community banks should look at their own.

Maybe your bank is performing exceptionally well with younger buyers.

Maybe national lenders have made significant inroads.

Maybe the answer varies dramatically from branch to branch.

You don't know until you look.

Then Look at What Borrowers See

Market activity tells one part of the story.

Search visibility tells another.

Around that same Wisconsin branch, the most-reviewed lender appearing in a search for “mortgage lender” had 601 Google reviews.

The bank's own listing had eight.

Now put those observations next to each other.

Large and national lenders were capturing a significant portion of the under-35 home-purchase loans examined in that market.

At the same time, the digital landscape could make some competitors appear far more established to someone searching for a lender.

That doesn't prove one caused the other.

But it gives a community bank a very good reason to investigate.

Ask the Questions That Matter

Community banks have spent generations building relationships.

The next challenge is making sure those relationships continue with the next generation.

That starts by asking:

Who is making home-purchase loans to younger buyers around our branches?

What does a prospective borrower see when searching for a mortgage lender?

How visible are our lenders?

Does our online reputation reflect our real-world reputation?

And perhaps most importantly:

When someone in our town has their first serious mortgage question, whose name comes to mind?

If the answer isn't your lender, that's the opportunity.

You don't need to become nationally famous.

You need to become Locally Famous.
